Biography
MAGNIN-A is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2009 in Paris by André Magnin and directed by Philippe Boutté, both recognized experts in modern and contemporary African art. A discoverer of talent, MAGNIN-A represents both established and emerging artists. The gallery works with passion and conviction to promote and disseminate artists at the most prestigious international art fairs and exhibitions.
An independent curator since 1980, André Magnin began his research into contemporary art within non-Western cultures in 1986 for the historic exhibition Magiciens de la Terre, presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette, where he served as Associate Curator. He then committed to C.A.A.C.–The Pigozzi Collection to develop the world’s largest collection of contemporary African art. He served as its Artistic Director for 20 years, dividing his time between Africa and Europe.
Since 1991, he has brought numerous African artists to international prominence through multiple group and solo exhibitions in major institutions worldwide (most recently: Beauté Congo – 1926–2015 – Congo Kitoko and Malick Sidibé – Mali Twist at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain; Alpha Crucis at the Astrup Fearnley Museet, among others). He has also acted as artistic advisor for exhibitions such as Art/Afrique, le Nouvel Atelier at the Fondation Louis Vuitton (2017); Bodys Isek Kingelez – City Dreams (2017) and Frédéric Bruly Bouabré – World Unbound (2022) at MoMA, New York.
