YAMAMBA, NOH THEATER MASK
Japan
Carved and signed on the back by the master Deme Mitsuyasu known as Yūkan (1577-1652)
Estimated date: early Edo period, first half of 17th century
Japanese cypress wood, pigments, lacquer
Height: approx. 21.5 cm
Rare mask representing Yamamba, the spirit of an elderly woman, demonic, solitary and living in the mountains. Yūkan was an illustrious Noh mask sculptor, son of the no less famous Deme Yoshimitsu aka Zekan. In 1616, he took over the reins of the hereditary guild of master Noh mask sculptors founded by his father, the Ono Deme house, and was like him awarded the Tenka ichi, a title literally meaning “best under the heavens” granted by the Shogunate to the most accomplished artists of a certain genre. Only seven noh mask sculptors were honored with this title.
