The gallery was funded in the 1960's when African artworks from Mali, Nigeria and Cameroon came to Paris. Thank to rare pieces such as Batcham mask or Buli figures from Zaire, the gallery of the Saint-Jacques dead-end quickly became a must-see. The Dartevelle gallery sold to many museums, including the Quai Branly Museum in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Nowadays, the gallery managed by Valérie Dartevelle sells artworks from ancient private collections and from public auctions.
